Who are we?
We are short circuit!
A blog article with national and international writers aimed a youth with a keen interest in up and coming tech! We want to reach the new generation of STEM geniuses!
Meet our founders:
Regina
My name is Regina Garrido, and I am a 17-year-old Mexican senior! I'm currently in DP2, and I aspire to major in computer science, with the hope of becoming a machine learning engineer in the future.
My favorite subject at school is, as expected, computer science! I love basketball (I’ve been playing since I was basically born), and my favorite player is Caitlin Clark. As for food, nothing beats authentic Mexican tacos (no Taco Bell hard-shell fake tacos). My love for STEM started at age 6 when I received my Nintendo 3DS. It wasn’t until I accidentally dropped it that I began discovering the wonders behind the technology that projected Mario Kart onto my screen.
One of the most remarkable projects I've been part of is FaceMaskAI, a convolutional neural network designed for real-time facemask detection. It helps ensure safety in medical environments, particularly in doctors' offices, by identifying whether individuals are wearing masks. This solution has enhanced health security and contributed to safer public spaces.
Another experience that I hold close to my heart is my community and service trip to Tanzania, where I had the privilege of contributing to the development of Dolly Primary School. I helped with the construction of classrooms, provided desks, built a goat shed, installed solar panels for homes, and supported children through donations and care. This life-altering experience broadened my perspective on diverse cultures and community service. There is nothing I love more than to give back to my people, this is why I decided to expand what I learnt in Tanzania and co founded "Construyendo Futuros, Una Página A La Vez" Non profit org which raised over 21,000 pesos to help an impoverished public primary school abandoned by the government in Nevado de Toluca.
I hope we can provide you with the most interesting updates in the industry, keeping your tech-savvy mind engaged with revolutionary advancements, while also discussing the ethical and moral issues as the field continues to grow!
Shreeka
My name is Shreeka Thangarasu and I am a 17-year-old Mexican-Indian senior! I'm currently in IBDP2 with aspirations of one day becoming an aerospace/mechanical engineer.
I love STEM, with my favourite classes being physics and maths, but also English! I'm a big hobby writer and enjoy reading when I get the time, as well as digital art! I've been a tech junkie my whole life (you can thank Marques Brownlee for that). If I had to timeline it, I'd say it all started when I was around 7 and the Galaxy s7 Edge came out—the curved screen had me absolutely hooked. Nowadays you can find me geeking out about the newest drawing tech or game mods (yes, GameBanana is always open, how did you know!?)
Two projects very dear to me are my clubs, both of which I founded: the engineering club, as well as the garden restoration (co-founded). Over the past year, I've managed to raise hundreds of dollars in funding for my projects, bringing in money to revitalise decrepit facilities in the garden, introducing compost bins in our community, as well as connecting my two clubs by making sensor-activated sprinklers in engineering for the garden! I've also got a website running for our school garden, so go check it out if you'd like: https://greengates.carrd.co/
Much of the food grown in our garden is actually donated, which is why I want to continue growing and connecting my two clubs! I believe tech is a gateway into not only a more equitable, but sustainable future, and I hope this blog will help bring us closer to making that our present.
Some of my favourite things I've built include 3D-printed robotic arms and remote-controlled cars, though nothing beats the flimsy paper helicopters I made with my big brother when I was young. In fact, those very helicopters sparked my love for aerospace (though, I didn't know the word for it yet), and as a believer in passion before convention, I want future generations of engineers to get to experience that same love for their creations at a young age, just like me.
